valorificarea in situ a vestigiilor într-o manieră inedită.

Mangalia city is the largest urban settlement in southern Dobrogea, with a millennial
and multicultural history, has historical and cultural resources of unique value to turn it into a
true open-air museum and a desirable tourist destination.
The Callatis Archeology Museum is an institution dedicated to the development of
the museum heritage through the characteristic forms of establishment: research,
documentation, conservation and valorization of the historical remains of the ancient city
Callatis. Although the creation of a museum core in Mangalia can be talked since 1915. It was
founded with the support of the local authorities in 1959. The archeology museum was
established in a villa-type building. The archaeological material collected from the
necropolises of the old citadel - with the unusual appearance of the unique "tomb with

papyrus", numerous sculptural and architectural fragments, among which were: the unique
capital with ram protome and the hoard of bronze coins (approx. 9000) from the III BC were
just some of the attractions of the modest museum.
In 1978, the cultural heritage of the city of Mangalia was enriched with a new
museum premises designed to present the multi-millenary history of Callatis. The Callatis
Archeology Museum functioned as a departament of the Constanţa National History and
Archeology Museum, and in 1990 it acquired an independent legal status. Beside the
systematic and rescue research carried out by the collective from Mangalia on the territory of
the ancient city, in the necropolis area and in the Callatian chora, in 1993-1994, primary
conservation and restoration measures were undertaken in the area of the site within the
premises of the "President" Hotel, completed with the in situ valorization of the vestiges in an
unprecedented manner.
Today, in the basic exhibition of the Callatian museum we can find different
categories of vestiges, from the oldest, attributed to the Neolithic period, to those from
Christian era.
