Museum of Urban Engineering in Cracow

The Museum of Municipal Engineering was established on October 1, 1998, by the Municipality of Kraków and was given the historic halls of the oldest Kraków tram depot as its headquarters.
The museum’s origins date back to 1975, when the idea of establishing a transportation museum in Kraków emerged during the centenary celebrations of the city’s public transport. A major contribution to the creation of the new museum institution was made by the Historical Section, established in 1984 at the Municipal Transport Company in Kraków, whose first head was Jan Koźmic. The efforts of the Section’s members led, in 1985, to the registration of the architectural complex of tram depots on św. Wawrzyńca Street as a historical monument under number A-680.
People affiliated with other technology-related institutions, such as the Association of Transport Engineers and Technicians or the Urban Transport Enthusiasts Club, also participated in the creation of the new museum. The role of the Kraków Society for the Protection of Technical Monuments, established in 1990, was crucial and significantly accelerated the museum’s organization.
A key date in the museum’s history was February 15, 1994, when the Historic Rolling Stock Repository was established in the narrow-gauge electric tram depot hall from 1901 on św. Wawrzyńca Street. The collections of this repository, as well as the site itself, became the nucleus of the Museum of Municipal Engineering.
With the museum’s establishment, the process of revitalizing individual buildings and adapting them for museum purposes began. In 2000, renovation work started on the narrow-gauge electric tram depot, workshops, and power plant – today known as Hall D. In 2006–2007, the horse-drawn tram depot (Hall E) was renovated, and in 2007–2008, the 1912 hall built as a garage for standard-gauge electric trams was restored. This is now Hall F. At the same time, tracks were connected to this hall, linking the museum with the city network and enabling the operation of historical trams, which occasionally run through Kraków’s streets, such as during the summer as the Kraków Museum Line.
From 2008 to 2009, the former headquarters of the Kraków Tram Company, a building from 1882, was revitalized and now houses the museum’s administration. In subsequent years, warehouses from 1882 were also restored. The museum courtyard was refurbished, including the removal of its top layer, which revealed a historic 1923 gasoline tank, now displayed under a glass pyramid.
The museum also operates a branch – the Stanisław Lem Garden of Experiences, located at Aleja Pokoju 68 in the Polish Aviators’ Park. It is an open-air exhibition – a park where, through interactive experiences in acoustics, mechanics, hydrostatics, and optics, one can learn the laws of physics through play.
