Shelter on Szczeliniec

Medals available at the mountain hut!

As the name suggests, the shelter is located almost at the summit of Szczeliniec Wielki – the highest peak of the Stołowe Mountains, at an altitude of 919 m above sea level. The nearest base towns are Karłów and Pasterka. Access is from Radków or Kudowa Zdrój. It is one of only two shelters in Poland (the other being the Five Lakes Valley Shelter in the Tatra Mountains) that cannot be reached by car in any way. There is no road leading here that any vehicle could use. The only way to reach it is on foot.

Long ago, people fascinated by this place built 665 steps and a shelter at the summit (which has existed since 1845) – and it remains so to this day. From the building, there is a beautiful panorama of the Karkonosze Mountains with Śnieżka, the Sowie Mountains, Kamienne Mountains, and the Broumov Walls.

The shelter, located in the heart of the Stołowe Mountains National Park, is an excellent base for exploring the Stołowe Mountains and the Broumov Walls on the Czech side of the border.
