Ponoarele village

The Ponoarele karst area is representative for Mehedinți County due to its beauty, diversity and traditions preserved to this day, boasting very interesting and rare karst phenomena at the same time, for example God’s Bridge, the only circulated natural bridge in Europe.
Legends have been born on both sides of the bridge, about the bridge, about the caves, as well as about the lakes that appear and disappear – the karst lakes Zătonul Mare and Zătonul Mic. Many of the legends related to the appearance of these karst phenomena have a religious connotation.
Another natural setting of rare beauty is the Băluței Gorges, which have been sculpted by nature over time and which are the ideal place for lovers of tourist routes.
The limestone field, unique in Romania in size, due to its altitude (below 600 meters) and the compact, horizontal arrangement of the ditches, is a very interesting phenomenon that creates special effects for photography enthusiasts.
In terms of events, the “Lilac Festival”, organized since 1961 locally, has expanded, gathering participants from all over the country who enjoy the moment of lilac flowering and smelling in the forest declared a scientific reservation but also the blooming in early spring. The folk festival “Ponoare, Ponoare”, another local event recognized nationally,
discovers new musical talents every year.
Ponoarele is also identified by manufacturing the traditional romanian shirt (ie), the women from the village carrying on the long-forgotten tradition in other rural areas.
Tourists can buy the traditional article – Ia from Ponoarele, sewn by hand from the two local artisan shops.
