A Glimpse into History

The Plankensteins were knights—mounted soldiers who built a fortified house of white limestone (blanc, as it was called then) on a strategically defensible rocky outcrop. The castle was first documented in 1186. When the Renaissance replaced Gothic architecture, the castle underwent a grand expansion into a stately palace.
