City Zoological Garden in Lodz

Medals available at the lemur enclosure, the giraffe pavilion, and the kangaroo enclosure!

In the area of today’s Zoo and its neighboring regions, vast deciduous-coniferous forests still grew in the 19th century. For the workers of Łódź (especially those from Poznański’s factories), these forests were the main destination for May Day picnics and outings “for health.” In 1906, these green areas, aptly named Zdrowie (Health), were incorporated into the administrative boundaries of Łódź.

The Łódź Zoo is located almost in the city center, west of Piotrkowska Street. Here, you can see nearly all the most fascinating animal species from around the world—the most interesting big cats, the elephant Magda, giraffes, bears, small mammals, birds of prey, an aquarium, a butterfly house, and other remarkable fauna.

On the beautifully designed enclosures, you can admire Amur tigers, Asiatic lions, cheetahs, and lynxes. A unique attraction is the vultures, whose aviary features a “trapper’s path” open on weekends. However, every day, you can look these birds straight in the eye—without any barriers—from a specially prepared viewing point. Next to the vultures live exceptionally beautiful Chapman’s zebras.

The world of Australian fauna also has a well-designed enclosure. In this regard, the Łódź Zoo is very appealing, as visitors have many opportunities to observe the animals living there.

In addition to the numerous animals, the Łódź Zoo offers other attractions for the youngest visitors—a petting zoo where they can interact with small animals, feed them, and pet them, a rope park, a playground, an ice cream parlor, and souvenir shops. Scheduled animal feedings are also held on specific days and times.

Near the zoo entrance stands a small sculpture of Maurycy and Hawranek—an element of the Bajkowa Łódź (Fairytale Łódź) Trail.
