John Paul II came to Krakow in 1979 and at the same time to Skałka on the occasion of the 900th anniversary of the death of St Stanislaus, the ‘Church on Skałka’ was given the privilege of being counted among the Roman Basilicas with the honorary title of Minor Basilica. This is a gift from the Holy Father at the conclusion of the Year of St Stanislaus. John Paul II did not spare any signs of his veneration for the Holy Martyr Bishop. For the celebrations on the 750th anniversary of the canonisation of Bishop Stanislaus of Szczepanów, unable to come in person, John Paul II sent the Papal Legate, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, who, representing him, presided over Mass at Skałka on 11 May 2003.
