The Historical Museum, a branch of the Wrocław City Museum, continues the legacy of the Historical Museum of Wrocław, which was established in 1948 in the Town Hall and later incorporated into the Silesian Museum. In 1965, the Presidium of the National Council established a new, separate Historical Museum in Wrocław, again based in the Town Hall. Since 2000, the museum has been a branch of the Wrocław City Museum, and since 2008, it has operated in its new location—the Royal Palace. After a thorough renovation and modernization, the palace became a modern exhibition center.

The Royal Palace is located in the southern part of Wrocław’s historic Old Town, on Kazimierz Wielki Street, in an area now known as the District of Four Denominations.

The Historical Museum collects and exhibits artifacts related to Wrocław’s history and art, including craftworks, iconography (prints, engravings, and photographs), as well as documents, leaflets, posters, and banners. A unique part of the collection is dedicated to the history of Wrocław’s theaters.

The museum’s rich collections are displayed in the permanent exhibition “1000 Years of Wrocław” and in numerous temporary exhibitions. The museum also organizes cultural events, academic conferences, and lectures.
