What We Stand For: Home of the Young Wild Ones

With 65,000 members (as of July 2018), VfB Stuttgart is by far the largest sports club in Baden-Württemberg. But VfB Stuttgart is much more than just a sports club. Over its long and storied history, it has evolved into a symbol of sporting excellence with deep emotional resonance, becoming an integral part of everyday life and a cherished passion for countless people in the region. This connection stems from the club’s rich traditions and enduring values.

In early 2014, a series of surveys, interviews, and workshops brought together the perspectives of fans, employees, and sponsors to define the identity and unifying spirit of VfB Stuttgart. The result was a clear mission statement, helping the club shape its future on the foundation of shared values.

Arnulf Klett, Mayor of Stuttgart from 1945 to 1974, spoke these words in May 1953 on the club’s 60th anniversary:
“VfB has never given up—it has always lived by its motto, ‘Fearless and Loyal.’ This is why it has become a legend, not just in German football but worldwide, carrying the name of Stuttgart across the globe.”

The club’s visible anchor is its motto: “Fearless and Loyal.” Originally bestowed upon the young Kingdom of Württemberg 200 years ago by the House of Württemberg as a unifying creed, it evolved over centuries into a symbol of Swabian identity and Württemberg pride.

VfB takes pride in the fact that its supporters brought this motto into the stadium long ago, making it the club’s own:

“Fearless” reflects our trust in youth and commitment to bold, attacking football.

“Loyal” embodies the club’s unbreakable bond with Stuttgart, the Swabian people, and its Württemberg roots.

For VfB, one cannot exist without the other—and together, they mean so much more.
