The Tegelberg Massif

The Tegelberg Massif begins in the west at the Pöllat River, which flows beneath the Marienbrücke (Mary’s Bridge) and then passes close to Neuschwanstein Castle. From there, its ridge rises steeply eastward to 1,455 meters, featuring rugged spires and pinnacles. A bit farther east, the crest reaches 1,587 meters at the Tegelbergkopf. About one kilometer further east along the ridge lie the Tegelberghaus mountain hut and the upper station of the Tegelbergbahn cable car.

North of this ridge stands the striking Torkopf (1,645 m) pinnacle and the Gelbe Wandschrofen cliff. Between them rises the central support pillar of the cable car. The elevation east of the valley station, called Hornburg (1,172 m), is almost entirely forested.

The Tegelberg is accessible via its namesake cable car. The mountain is a popular destination for hikers, paragliders, hang gliders, and skiers. Near the upper station (1,720 m), there is a panoramic restaurant, and just a short distance away stands the Tegelberghaus. This historic inn once served as the royal Bavarian hunting lodge of King Maximilian II. Directly at the base station of the Tegelbergbahn, visitors can enjoy a 760-meter-long summer toboggan run.
