Railway Museum Strasshof – Where Austria’s Rail Veterans Live On
Near Vienna lies a haven for Austria’s railway veterans: the Eisenbahnmuseum Strasshof (Strasshof Railway Museum). Established on the grounds of a former train depot (operational until 1978) by the *”1. Österreichischer Straßenbahn- und Eisenbahnklub” (1.öSEK)*, the museum opened in 1984. In 1999, it also took custody of the railway exhibits from Vienna’s Technical Museum.
Visitors can explore 85,000 m² of open-air grounds featuring historic infrastructure, 8 operational steam locomotives, and around 150 rail vehicles over 100 years old—all displayed in their original, atmospheric setting.
On steam operation days, you can:
Ride along on the locomotives
Watch them in action on the turntable, at the coal lift, or by the water cranes
Guided tours provide insights into:
Railway history
The vehicle collection
Progress in restoration projects
