Sofia Zoo

The Sofia Zoo is one of the attractions in Sofia. It is among the Hundred National Tourist Sites of the Bulgarian Tourist Union. Currently, the Sofia Zoological Garden houses a large number of exotic animals, as well as many species native to the Bulgarian lands.
The Zoological Garden – Sofia is the oldest and largest on the Balkan Peninsula. Founded in 1888 by Prince Ferdinand, it quickly gained popularity and became a place for recreation, entertainment, and education, with world-renowned specialists and the breeding of valuable and rare animals. In 1982, the Zoo was relocated from its small site in the city center to its current location in the Lozenets district, covering an area of more than 360 decares (approximately 89 acres). The zoo is located 15 minutes from Sofia’s city center and is connected to various parts of the capital by convenient transport links.
