Sástó viewing platform

Sástó is located a few kilometers from Mátrafüred. The 40-meter-high observation tower, visible from afar, originally functioned as a drilling rig in Algyő.
The Sástó lookout tower is 53 meters high, manufactured in Romania, and was originally intended to serve as an oil drilling rig in Algyő near Szeged. However, it was never used for that purpose because it didn’t meet Hungarian standards. After a slight modification, it was relocated to Sástó in 1973, replacing a 10-meter-high wooden lookout tower built in 1961. Climbing it is well worth the effort, as its terraces offer stunning panoramic views. On clear days, you can see as far as the Tisza River and the Buda Hills.
On the first-floor terrace, you’ll find illustrations and carved birds to help with bird identification. The third-floor terrace features labeled landscape illustrations and a telescope to help identify the surrounding sights.
It’s also worth visiting the nearby adventure park and taking a hike to the Rákóczi Spring via the yellow cross trail, then continuing along the yellow stripe trail to the Muzsla lookout tower.
