The City Hall was ceremonially opened on April 20, 1896, and was used for administrative and governmental purposes. After World War II, it was assigned to the National Library and remained in that function until the aggression against Bosnia and Herzegovina. On the night between August 25 and 26, 1992, it was hit by incendiary artillery shells. The fire irreversibly destroyed the City Hall along with the vast book collection of the National and University Library, which included about 2 million items. The reconstruction of the City Hall began in 1996 and lasted until 2014, with the entire renovation carried out according to the original documentation. The reconstructed City Hall was ceremonially reopened on May 9, 2014, on Europe Day and Victory Day over Fascism. Today, it is used for official ceremonies at the state and city level, to promote events in culture, art, and the economy, and hosts both permanent and occasional museum exhibitions, regular City Council sessions, and appears to be used more diversely than ever before.
