In the centre of Olsztyn, visitors to the capital of Warmia and Mazury will find a distinctive building topped by a silver glittering dome….

The Olsztyn Planetarium has been one of Olsztyn’s main tourist attractions for nearly forty years. The Planetarium offers a balance between education and entertainment: there are popular screenings, where the emphasis is on the visual appeal of the message, and educational classes conducted under an artificial sky, presenting in an accessible way the astronomical knowledge forming part of school curricula.

On the day of Nicolaus Copernicus’ 539th birthday, 19 February 2012, a modern digital projection system was inaugurated at Olsztyn Planetarium. Two video projectors equipped with the appropriate optics cover the entire dome of the projection room with a total of 16 million pixels. The image, which surrounds the viewer, is controlled live using software that makes it possible to present the starry sky and the phenomena occurring therein as seen at any time and from any place on Earth or in space. We can view objects of the near and distant universe by wandering among planets, stars and galaxies. The projection system also functions as a projector for films made in fulldome technology, which are included in the Planetarium’s offer.
