PKL Kasprowy Wierch in Zakopane – Kuźnice

The medal is available at the lower station of the Gubałówka funicular!

The first cable car to Kasprowy Wierch (1987 m above sea level) was launched in 1936. It was the first of its kind in Poland and the entire Tatra Mountains. The upper station of the cableway is located just below the summit. (This is also where the highest meteorological observatory in Poland is located. From the terrace next to the station, you can enjoy a stunning panoramic view.)

The modernized cable car departs from Kuźnice (1027 m above sea level) and ascends to 1959 m above sea level. (The summit of Kasprowy, situated nearly in the middle of the Tatra ridge, is an excellent vantage point. A meteorological observatory is located right at the top.)

Among the millions of people who have taken the cable car to Kasprowy Wierch over the past 70 years was also Pope John Paul II. Karol Wojtyła loved the mountains and was an avid skier. He often stopped by the rescue station on Kasprowy to ask about the conditions—or simply to take in the breathtaking view.

On June 6th, 1997, Pope John Paul II visited the Tatras during his pilgrimage to Poland and once again took the cable car to the summit of Kasprowy Wierch.
