The Old Market Square in Poznań is the main city square, established around 1253 as the central point of the newly founded town. It’s a perfect square with sides measuring 141 meters each, with three streets extending from each side (two from the corners). Located in the Old Town district within the administrative neighborhood of Stare Miasto, it’s the third-largest market square in Poland (after Kraków’s and Wrocław’s) and one of the largest in Europe. It reached its final form in the 15th century. Twelve streets radiate from the square, forming the basis of the Old Town’s regular urban layout. The square’s center historically contained most public buildings – the town hall, municipal scales, guardhouse, pillory, cloth halls (no longer existing), bread stalls, and public wells. The most distinctive structure is the Renaissance town hall – a symbol of Poznań, considered the most beautiful town hall in Poland. Every day at noon, a trumpet call sounds from the tower, and two mechanical billy goats appear below the clock.
