National History Museum – Sofia

The National Historical Museum in Sofia is one of the largest history museums in the Balkans, housing over 650,000 cultural artifacts.
Today, the museum is located in a former government residence in the Boyana district of Sofia. Its permanent exhibition spans six halls, showcasing only a small fraction of its collection—yet these include some of its most valuable treasures.
The displays follow a chronological order, featuring:
The earliest large-scale metallurgical production in the world and the unique gold artifacts—symbols of power—from the Varna Chalcolithic Necropolis (5th millennium BC).
Masterpieces of ancient art, including the world-famous Panagyurishte Gold Treasure, silver ornaments from Borovo, Letnitsa, and Rogozen, and precious metal finds from the burial complexes of Duvanli and Vratsa.
Remarkable works of Hellenistic art.
The museum also presents the development of medieval Bulgarian history, culture, and daily life during the Ottoman rule.
Surrounded by a beautiful park facing Vitosha Mountain, the museum offers visitors a peaceful retreat. Naturally, the National Historical Museum is part of the “100 National Tourist Sites” movement, where it is listed as No. 58, alongside its nearby branch—the Boyana Church.
