Museum of Fortifications and Bats, Międzyrzecz Fortified Region in Pniewo

Medals available at the souvenir shop!
Built between 1934 and 1938, this was the most technologically advanced fortification system of Nazi Germany and remains one of the largest and most fascinating of its kind in the world today. It consists of around 100 concrete defensive structures, partially connected by a network of underground tunnels. Some of the forts and tunnels are open to visitors.
The most intriguing part is the central section, which begins in the south at the so-called Boryszyn Loop near the village of Boryszyn and stretches approximately 12 km northward. In the central area, the bunkers are linked by an underground tunnel system spanning 32 km in length and reaching depths of up to 40 meters. The underground complex also includes railway stations, workshops, engine rooms, and barracks.
It is also Europe’s largest underground refuge for bats, providing shelter for around 32,000 bats of 12 species during the winter months.
