The Museum of Bourgeois Art was established as a branch of the Wrocław City Museum in 2000. It specializes in collecting, documenting, and presenting objects related to Wrocław’s craft workshops and artists from ancient times to the present day. It is housed in Wrocław’s most important building – the Old Town Hall. Located in the city center, this impressive and richly decorated structure is undoubtedly the flagship landmark of Lower Silesia’s capital and one of the most outstanding examples of late Gothic secular architecture in Europe.

The Town Hall itself, with its excellently preserved interior decor, can be considered the museum’s main exhibit. Among its interiors, the Great Hall stands out. Its late Gothic origins are emphasized by impressive ribbed vaults, portals, keystones, and bas-reliefs. With an area of over 650 m², it is one of the largest halls of its kind in Gothic town halls in Europe.

Next to the Great Hall, in the former chapel now called the Prince’s Hall, silver items made in the workshops of Wrocław’s goldsmiths from the 16th to the 19th century are displayed. In the Council Elders’ Room on the same floor, visitors can admire a group portrait of councilors and jurors by Georg Scholz the Younger from 1668.

The rooms on the ground floor and in the northern annex of the Town Hall are also noteworthy. Particularly richly decorated is the Council Chamber, while the Council Office is more modest. In the oldest part of the Town Hall – the Burghers’ Hall – visitors can admire the Gallery of Famous Wrocław Citizens.

The Museum of Bourgeois Art also organizes numerous temporary exhibitions, including works by internationally renowned artists such as Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró, and Andy Warhol.
