Lake Hopfen am See

Hopfen am See at the Foot of the Allgäu Mountains

View from the South
Hopfen am See is a district of the Bavarian town of Füssen in the Swabian district of Ostallgäu.

This air and Kneipp spa resort, shaped by tourism, lies on the northern shore of Lake Hopfensee, about four kilometers northwest of Füssen, at an elevation of 801 meters (2,628 ft) above sea level. The area offers numerous accommodations, including spa clinics, hotels, vacation apartments, private guesthouses, and a campsite.

Perched on a hill overlooking the village are the ruins of Hopfen Castle.

The first documented mention of Hopfen am See dates back to 1172, when it was referred to as “de Hophen”. For a long time, the settlement consisted of only a few houses. In the early 20th century, it gradually expanded and was officially granted the suffix “am See” (by the lake).

After World War II, Hopfen developed into a spa and holiday destination. As part of Bavarian municipal reforms, the formerly independent municipality first merged with the village of Eschach on April 1, 1971, before being incorporated into the city of Füssen on May 1, 1978.

The parish church of St. Peter and Paul, restored in 1984, features stucco work by Joseph Fischer of Faulenbach—a master craftsman of his time. Also noteworthy are 15th-century fresco fragments depicting St. George’s battle with the dragon.
