The hill on which Kłodzko Fortress stands is 369 meters above sea level.

Kłodzko Fortress covers an area of 32 hectares (800 meters long north-south, 400 meters east-west). In 981 AD, the Kłodzko stronghold was probably owned by Sławnik, father of St. Adalbert (St. Wojciech), one of the main patrons of the Church and Poland. Adalbert must therefore have visited here often – today his tomb in Gniezno Cathedral is the oldest pilgrimage site in Poland.

In 1960, the Fortress was officially recognized as a historical monument and opened to tourists. The part of the fortifications accessible to visitors constitutes just 10% of the entire complex. Accompanied by a guide dressed in a historical uniform, visitors have the chance to conquer the fortress’s ultimate defensive point – the donjon. From the bastions towering over Kłodzko, one can admire panoramic views of the town and the mountains surrounding the Kłodzko Valley, known as the Tourist County of the Sudetes. Brave souls under the watchful eye of a Prussian soldier will have the opportunity to undergo rapid artillery training at one of our cannons. We invite the bravest (and the less brave too) to explore our underground tunnels, popularly called labyrinths. There awaits nearly a kilometer of passages to traverse from over forty kilometers of underground miners’ tunnels stretching beneath the fortress’s combat slope.

The Fortress is a place shrouded in mystery, gathering many historical events from bygone eras along with various legends and tales. The guides leading tours through the Fortress will reveal its secrets to you and tell in an engaging way about the turbulent history of this fortification.
