In Karpacz, there’s a special place where adults return to childhood memories and children can see the adult world captured in miniature. Here, smiles appear on adult faces and joy lights up children’s eyes. This magical place is the charming but compact City Toy Museum, established in 1995 from the collection of Henryk Tomaszewski – the famous mime and founder of the Wrocław Mime Theater.
In fairy-tale settings created by Kazimierz Wiśniak, against a backdrop of painted shelves, children can see dolls attending school, taking walks, or eating dinner. Here, Uszatek the Teddy Bear welcomes children, boys marvel at fire trucks and Lego sets, while girls admire wonderful miniature dollhouses with complete furnishings – every girl dreams of having such a house. At a miniature market stall like those from old fairs, children can admire long-forgotten sugar and gingerbread decorations, clay roosters and wooden horses.
The collection presents a cross-section of toy-making spanning about 200 years, from 18th-century nativity scene figures through 19th-century dolls to typical 20th-century toys. Here you can see dolls from Japan, Mexico and Australia.
The display cases showing the toys are designed to be accessible to school-age children.
