Hohenschwangau Castle

The History of Hohenschwangau Castle

From 1832 to 1836, Crown Prince Maximilian of Bavaria had the ruined Schwanstein Castle rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic style. King Ludwig II not only spent his youth here but also used this castle as a summer residence until his death in 1886.

In the 12th century, Hohenschwangau Castle—then known as Schwanstein Castle—was first mentioned in historical records. Until the 16th century, it was owned by the Knights of Schwangau, after which it changed hands multiple times. During various wars, it suffered severe damage repeatedly.

In 1832, the future King Maximilian II, father of King Ludwig II, acquired the castle and had it rebuilt in the Neo-Gothic style based on original plans. The Bavarian royal family used it as a summer and hunting residence.

King Ludwig II not only spent his childhood here but also used it as a summer residence until his death in 1886.

Since 1928, Hohenschwangau Castle has been owned by the Wittelsbach Compensation Fund.
