Garmisch Partnach Gorge

The Partnach Gorge has long been no secret. Every year, more than 300,000 visitors explore this natural monument, which was first developed for tourism in 1912. Stretching 699 meters (2,293 ft) in length and plunging to depths of around 80 meters (262 ft), the gorge is undoubtedly one of the highlights of any trip to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. It’s perfect for a short excursion or as the starting point for hikes into the Reintal Valley. Note that you cannot drive directly to the gorge; allow about 20 minutes for the walk from the parking area—or opt for a leisurely horse-drawn carriage ride if available.
To give you a sneak peek, this page lets you virtually explore the Partnach Gorge and learn about its geological history. But nothing compares to experiencing it in person. Around every corner, a new perspective emerges: the dramatic rock formations shift, and the roar of the Partnach River echoes through the narrow cliffs.
Winter Tip: Unlike many gorges (such as Grainau’s Höllentalklamm), the Partnach Gorge remains open year-round. Thanks to secured pathways and tunnels, you can witness a magical icy spectacle. Towering icicles and glacial walls (up to 30 meters / 98 ft tall) cling to the cliffs, while the river dances beneath layers of ice, creating surreal sculptures.
Dress warmly—sunlight rarely reaches this frozen wonderland. Sturdy footwear is essential, but the paths remain accessible, offering an unforgettable adventure amid nature’s icy artistry.
