Dzików Castle

Medals can be purchased at the entrance to the museum!

The castle in Dzików (Tarnobrzeg) is the residence of the Tarnowski family of Leliwa Coat of Arms, distinguished for Poland. Its origins were in a tower court built in the 15th century, which the Tarnowskis acquired in 1522 and extended in the first half of the 17th and late 18th centuries. In the years 1834-1836, the castle was rebuilt in the spirit of English Neo-Gothic to a design by Francesco Maria Lancie as a residence – a museum, to house the excellent collections amassed by Waleria and Jan Feliks Tarnowski and thus create one of the first centres of Polish museology. After a fire in the castle in December 1927, it was rebuilt according to a design by Wacław Krzyżanowski in the early Vasa Baroque style. An outstanding work of art was created, which was also the last monumental architectural realisation in the history of the Polish landed gentry.

After World War II, the Dzik collections were dispersed and the castle housed an agricultural school, which operated until 2007. At present, the castle and its surroundings – a landscape park from the 18th century, relics of bastion fortifications from the 17th century and 19th century accompanying buildings – are being thoroughly revalorised. The restoration work, based on a concept by Adam Wójcik and a design by Zbigniew Jasak and Krzysztof Rymsza-Mazur, is being carried out by the City of Tarnobrzeg with the help of EU funds and a grant from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. Since 2008 the castle has been the seat of the Historical Museum of Tarnobrzeg. So far, the cellars of the 10th-17th century have been furnished with an exhibition on the history of the residence; in the coming years it is planned to furnish 24 historical chambers on the ground and first floors, reconstructed according to the preserved source materials. The restoration of the former Dzikowska Collection is also envisaged.
The renovated and furnished castle will be one of the most interesting buildings of its kind in Poland.
