Chapel of Bones

The Chapel of Bones was built in the 17th century, following a then-popular model, with the intention of using imagery to provoke reflection on the transience of human life and the consequent commitment to permanent Christian living. Both the walls and pillars are lined with thousands of bones and skulls, taken from the burial grounds connected to the convent. The frescoes decorating the vaulted ceiling, dating from 1810, feature a variety of symbols illustrated by biblical passages and others depicting the instruments of Christ’s Passion. Upon exiting the chapel, on the opposite wall, a tile panel by architect Siza Vieira contrasts the allusion to death with the miracle of life.
