Ancient Theatre – Plovdiv

The theater’s seating area faces south—toward the ancient city in the lowlands and the Rhodope Mountains. In plan, the theater forms a semicircle with an outer diameter of 82 meters.

The open auditorium (cavea) consists of 28 concentric rows of marble seats, divided by a walkway (diazoma) into two tiers. Vertically, the two tiers are intersected by narrow radial stairways, which divide the cavea into wedge-shaped sectors (kerkides).

The seating area surrounds the orchestra (performance space), which is horseshoe-shaped with a diameter of 26.64 meters.
