Amber Museum

The Amber Museum in Colți
The interest sparked by the existence of amber deposits in the area, along with the locals’ dedication to extracting and processing this fossilized resin, led to the establishment of the Colți Museum Collection, inaugurated on June 14, 1980.
The initiative to create this collection dates back to 1973, when construction began on a building designed in the architectural style typical of the region. A study on amber extraction and processing was compiled, and efforts to collect raw amber nuggets, tools used by locals, and historical documents about Colți and its surroundings were initiated.
Unique in Romania due to the variety and size of its amber exhibits, the collection was officially inaugurated during the revival of the folk festival “Floare de Colți” and was reorganized in 1983, 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2020. Since October 2020, it has been known as the Amber Museum.
After a renovation, the museum reopened in August 2020 with a new exhibition concept, showcasing:
Amber nuggets of various sizes,
Jewelry (rings, earrings, pendants, bead necklaces, etc.),
Tools for extraction and processing (wooden lathes, hammers, oil lamps, pickaxes).
The Amber Museum is the only one of its kind in Romania, housed in a building constructed in 1973 in the local architectural style and renovated between 2019 and 2020 with an investment of €100,000. The exhibition features:
Raw and polished amber in translucent, transparent, and opaque forms, ranging from yellow to reddish-brown or green-black,
Jewelry and decorative items (cigarette holders, brooches, etc.),
Innovative technologies:
A smart touchscreen display case for interactive exploration,
Automated cabinets with LCD screens and smart lighting,
3D live-edge furniture,
Touchscreen monitors providing historical and tourist information about the area’s rock-hewn monuments.
The visitor experience is enhanced by ambient sound and archival footage from 1934, showcasing traditional amber extraction and processing methods.
The museum comprises 5 exhibition rooms:
“The Nucu-Bozioru Cave” – A photo exhibition of a unique prehistoric and medieval spiritual site in Romania and Southeastern Europe. The cave (closed to the public for conservation) features Bronze Age engravings linked to warrior initiation rituals.
“Prehistoric Colți” – Displays paleofauna from Buzău County, including bones of extinct giant Quaternary mammals.
Amber Extraction & Processing – Dedicated to the work of scientist Gheorghe Munteanu-Murgoci, who documented the region’s rare black amber (rumanite). During the interwar period, ~2,000 kg of amber were systematically extracted here.
“Amber: History & Refinement” – Showcases the cultural significance of amber.
“Mine Flowers & Minerals” – Innovatively presents mineral samples from across Romania.
The museum’s crown jewel is the world’s largest rumanite nugget (3,480 grams), displayed at the Buzău County Museum.
